Baby Care Essentials 3: Modern Life

Babies are so endearing and lovable, it is easy to find yourself wanting to snuggle with your little one all day!

Like most parents however, you likely have things you need to get done, and eventually your arms will tire. Interactive play mats are not only great for tummy time, they are a wonderful way to help your baby develop her hand-eye coordination. Most have interchangeable toys that you can move around and swap out to keep baby interested over time.

Another way to free up your hands so you can accomplish your to-do list is to wear your baby. The Baby Bjorn has the best support, can be used front or back-facing, and is safe for newborns. This type of carrier does not allow you to nurse while you are wearing it, but can be a lot quicker and easier to put on and get your baby in an out of. Some mothers prefer a cloth sling carrier because of the versatility and multiple different ways baby can be carried.
When you need a minute to make a cup of coffee, fold some laundry, or take a shower, a bouncer chair like this one will be your best friend! It is lightweight and easy to carry so that you can move it room to room as needed.

For naps, diaper changes, playpen use, visiting friends or relatives, and going on vacations with your baby, the Pack’ n Play is a must! It is extremely versatile and makes changing diapers so much more convenient if you have a multi-level home. The type with the removable bassinet is great because it allows you to bring your sleeping newborn with you wherever you are in the house. As your baby grows, the upper level can be used with or without the changing table attached as a place for your baby to nap in the living room. Or, if you don’t want to purchase multiple items for sleeping, can be used in the bedroom as a portable bassinet before your little one starts sleeping in her own bedroom. When your baby starts rolling over and sitting up, remove the upper level and use the playard as a daytime crib or contained play area.
Once your baby is sleeping in her bedroom, you will likely want to have a baby monitor. Traditional monitors get the job done, but the new video style monitors are very handy because they allow you to check on your baby when he is not crying without potentially waking him by poking your head in the bedroom. It is also handy to be able to keep an eye on your baby when he is fussing so that you can determine if he needs you or if he is on his way to falling asleep. Some video monitors also have added features which include a temperature reading which are very handy for ensuring it is comfortable in baby’s room.

It can seem as if there are as many different car seats on the market as there are cars. It is best to go with trusted manufacturers and make sure that you check the safety certifications and recall lists. For trips to the grocery store, going on walks, and even visits to the doctor (if you live in the city,) this car seat and stroller combination is an excellent investment! The car seat goes straight from the car to the stroller, which collapses and opens in a snap with a single-handed motion. When used in conjunction, the car seat and stroller canopies can be closed on either side to completely enclose baby. The stroller itself can be adjusted in many different ways and will accommodate your baby from birth until she is old enough to be walking all the time!

I had to look twice at the mother holding her baby in a cloth sling carrier because, it looked like my daughter, Amy, holding her newborn.

Amy has tried several different carriers including the Ergobaby but, she prefers the Baby Bjorn Original carrier. It is easy, safe, and fast to put on and it has a forward facing option.

The Bjorn is lightweight and can also be adjusted to the length of the baby which gives the baby more comfortable foot and leg room.

She really likes it on hot days because it keeps her baby cooler than other carriers.

Hi, Marty. Thanks for your comment! The Baby Bjorn is a favorite among mothers because it is so versatile and so easy to use! It is made really well and is much more comfortable to wear because of the great padding, the design and fit, and all of the adjustment options! Keeping your baby cool while wearing him or her is very important! That is another reason why the Baby Bjorn is so nice because it has a lot of airflow! The one thing that it does not allow for is nursing while wearing, which is why some mothers prefer to use, or also use, a sling type carrier. Congratulations on the new addition to your family!

I have a 3 month old, that is almost 16 pounds, I love holding and cuddling him, but my arms do get tired. He likes being close or held at all times and I’ve tried the Baba wrap and I haven’t found it beneficial due to my baby sliding down, so I will definitely have to try the baby bjorn you have recommended, thank you
